Enhance curb appeal with one of these trending front door colours

I think everyone recognizes the truth of the saying "first impressions are important" when we first meet new people. We probably heard it first from our mothers (right before they spit on their napkin and rubbed our face clean--blechh, right?) Mothers, it turns out, do know best. This expression is just as true with our homes as it is with our own human selves. So sure, if you are looking to sell your home, you should be looking for ways to enhance the curb appeal of your home, and this post will help you with that. However, to my mind it is even more important that we feel happy about the home we are keeping, starting with that first impression we see every time we arrive home at the end of the day.

A while ago I wrote a post on how to instantly update your home's exterior with paint, which you can check out here. Today I want to talk about one of the most effective (and low-cost, just the price of a small can of paint!) ways to give your home an instant facelift right where it counts, your front entrance.

Of course, a classic black door is always a sophisticated choice, like this understated front porch, right.

However, if you think you'd like to try something a little more daring, now is definitely the time! There has lately been a real swing towards fun front door colours, and why not? It's a great way to have some fun, and give your mood a little bump every time you come home (which is what your home should do for you, right?).

So to help you make the leap, I've assembled a round-up of the possibilities that are out there for you.

I'm going to ease you into this by starting with some blue front doors, which are not a huge departure from that good ol' classic black, with a fresh spin.

And now on to something a little bit more daring...

teal blue painted front door
And we can't forget beautiful teal blue!

And next up, I can't hold back any longer, I have to show you some beautiful doors in my favourite colour, green ;)

The lavender blooms in the teal pots really set off the kelly green of these front doors (via tumbleweed-interiors.com)

olive green painted front door with red brick, white pumpkins
I think this olive green by Emily A Clark is my favourite. It looks so good with the red brick and is styled so beautifully with the white pumpkins and the gourds

khaki painted front door with cedar shakes and topiary, greige painted brick
This khaki coloured door from hgtv is a nice toned-down option, while still adding a touch of the unexpected. It looks wonderful with the cedar shakes and the greige painted brick here.

Now that we're warmed up to the idea of a nice colourful front door, let's make a radical leap... to hot pink! One paired with black, the other with white, both stunning in their own way.

Or how about this almost purple door? (That's quite a knocker too!)

And hello to you too, cheery coral via lollyjane...

And now that we're at coral, that's a perfect segue into orange, for those of you who want a real pop of colour:

Orange looks great with brown tones of brick or siding, like this entry here by warlinepainting...

...but also looks great with whites, greys and blues. No matter what, people will know someone gutsy lives behind these doors!

And now let's wrap up the round-up, as it were, with that happiest possible pop of colour, yellow, to make your house sing!

Yellow looks great with today's popular grey colours for home exteriors, like this yellow paired with light grey via creative living

And is also very striking with darker greys, as you can see here via dvibz.blogspot

It's a perfect complement to blue, which is a colour a lot of people are gravitating towards when updating their exterior these days:

And like orange, is a great way to freshen and lighten a brown house:

And of course yellow just sings with a white house; for proof look no further than this image via the master of white, Loi Thai! I just feel happy looking at this house, how about you?

So, my friends, if you're itching for a change but aren't looking for a huge and permanent commitment, why not take the leap at summer's end, when the temperatures are cooler and ideal for exterior painting, and choose a colour that is a bit (or a lot!) of a departure for you?

C'mon, I dare ya! It'll be fun!

If you have been thinking of painting your front door in an unexpected colour, or if you already have, please let me know in the comments, and I'd love to see pictures! I'm for sure planning on making a switch soon, I just have to decide on which colour first. Hmmm...
